Noorain Inam
In this body of work, Inam eschews the accessible symbols and formality of manuscript painting, instead using these symbolic methods and scale to give language to her interior life.
Noorain’s paintings live firmly in the realm of the uncanny, where our sense of orientation and relationality is deeply skewed. While painting at a scale we might call miniature, Inam eschews the formality of manuscript painting through a looser, less stable approach. Her compositions of domestic scenes speak to the mystery and unfamiliar of one’s own inner world.
The paintings rely heavily on themes of darkness and illumination, large amounts of negative standing in for the great unknowns of one’s own unconscious. Rendered a personal symbology of dream imagery–doors, a lighthouse, gloves–present an abstracted narrative of interiority.
