Sanié Bokhari
Starting with a more straightforward representation of a newlywed couple, drawing likeness from the artist and her husband, Bokhari challenges the rigidity of this form. The couple is enmeshed in a grid structure that serves to exemplify the formal elements of the manuscript-style rendition of the figures. Within the squares of the grid is type of pre-digital glitch, the figures distorted through a deconstructive effect, component parts misplaced and rebuilt.
These deconstructed figures are placed against a stunningly composed body of water, its flow and movement effortless and natural. However, the two components of the painting are not in opposition. We instead see a beautiful coexistence of human efforts to tell and re-tell stories, and a more organic state of flow. In this juxtaposition, Bokhari seeks to move beyond straightforward storytelling to deeper questions of consciousness. She simultaneously draws upon and departs from the traditions of Indo-Persian miniature, finding a new mode to reveal her inner world.
