KOMAIL AIJAZUDDIN'S Gathering series feature compositions from gender-segregated Muslim religious gatherings called Majlis, rendered in digitally-inflected aesthetic of memory. The removal of the context and focus on male bodies creates a point of ambiguity, evoking the interior spaces of a gay club and a suggestion of eroticism. The slippage between desire and spiritual transcendence speaks to the blurry, often contextually fluid nature of meaning and memory.
